Princeton professor and Bennett College president debate the Democratic Party acceptance speech of Sen. Barack Obama. Drs. Julianne Malveaux and Cornel West seem to agree on Barack Obama's indubitable avoidance of race-related issues, even with the memory of Dr. King's infamous "I Have A Dream Speech" lurking in the background. Wallacrr Says:
Sep 5, 2008 - Okay!! I think that its great that "Our Black Leaders are trying to make others accountable and are thinking critically" Great! But I do think we know as black people what's fair and balanced. I can look at Fox news and know that they are not fair and balanced! I can look at CNN coverage and tell its not fair and balanced! And I can say the same thing about these 3! I would respect them more if they would just come out and say what it is that don't like about Obama
Wallacrr Says:
Sep 5, 2008 - This way we know exactly we know where they are coming from.
Wallacrr Says:
Sep 5, 2008 - I guess we should believe that Sean Hannity and Bill Oreilly are making people accountable and critically thinking as well. We all know they are fair and balanced.
BrikMason Says:
Sep 5, 2008 - I have he highest respect for the panel there, but to argue over semantics at time like this is just plain tacky. I mean have they not paid attention to how Obama makes a speach before. He has always made references to people without dropping names even unto hiself, refering to him a skinny kid from Illinois. Far be it for Obama to say something like "A preacher from Georgia" on the 45th aniversary of the I Have A Dream speech, and not expect people to not make he connection. Get a grip Tavis.
dimegood Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - I'm glad this video has been posted. I can't say this enough, and this is why I will not be voting for Barack, "If he downplays race to gain power. He will downplay race to maintain power." This will be the first time in my life that I vote for a republican and I will do so gladly. John McCain is in favor of school choice and we, African-Americans are the greatest benefactors of school voucher programs. Obama's kids don't go to public schools, but our kids in poor neighborhoods are suppossed to?
Rasputin7798 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - I agree with you hornybo. That exactly what its. Barak delivered a brilliant political speech but the way he has handled race and the balck agenda has been weak. Malveaux and West have been feeling the same way just used this moment to express their discontent. But this moment could have been monumental had he addressed the black agenda somewhat.
Rasputin7798 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - I think they are saying it. They are expressing discontent with how Barak Obama is handling the black agenda. Its like what Barak is doing is great politically but.... many of us don't feel our agenda is getting enough attention. And what is to assure us that it ever will. Politicans have to answer to different lobbyist groups Abortion, Labor, Environmentalist why can we not hold them to the black Agenda? We should thats what Tavis has been calling for for years.
Rasputin7798 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - I'm disappointed you feel that way about these black intellectuals. They are not too militant to be progressive. They are historically sound enough to know that their are myriad of ways that mainstream America and white supremacy has attacked black people in this country. If we don't stand for our own and we run from the history we cannot create a better future. The real stand up black people we respect have dealt with racial issues head on. Barak is doing a great amount of compromising...
Rasputin7798 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - I mean I think this is kind of far fetched to draw such parallels between Hannity and O'reilly to Malveuax and West. These two are giving you their real feelings on Barak. They share in the joy of him being the first but criticize him in being weak for not addressing race. Can't their criticism just be genuine. They like Barak, but think he is not strong enough on race issues so the moment which could have meant more meant a little less.
joharmon86 Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - dimegood, you're comment about school vouchers is idiotic. John McCain's proposal is for vouchers of 2 thousand dollars, which couldn't pay for any private school with a strong academic reputation and certainly not John McCain's fancy boarding school he went to in Virginia (the Episciopal School), where he was a poor student.
dimegood Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - joharmon, you are a liar. From the Pew Forum: "McCain supports vouchers that would allow students to attend public or private schools, including religious schools, arguing that "it's time to give middle- and lower-income parents the same right wealthier families have -- to send their child to the school that best meets their needs." This sounds a lot more helpful to students and parents caught in a horrible situation than what Obama proposes, which is to basically tell them, "too bad".
dimegood Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Besides joharmon, how many parents in the hood do you think could afford the fancy private school that Obama attended? Let's not start telling those lies again as if he is some poor kid from the ghetto because he's not. There isn't a single, food stamp receiving woman in the hood who could afford a flight for she and her son to INDONESIA. Obama is a fraud and he's played over black folks long enough. I pray he will be crushed in November. I'm positive he will be.
Wallacrr Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - then Cornel West, Dr. malveau, and TAvis should run For president since they are so right on about race issues! let them run since they have all the answers!!! since they know better than everyone else. Or better yet everyone that supports them just run a campaign so that they can run. Better Yet lets just all vote for John McCain since he addresses our issues all the time!
tuttlm21 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - All these black 'intellects' don't know anything about the current political situation. They want this man to be a black panther only speaking on black issues, then lose an election. Unless they want to vote for Mccain's old ass, they should talk about the future, not the past. We also know the state of the black community and how their generation has let us down. And now that we know what we need to do to take things a step further the old blacks want to hate, because they aren't it.
tuttlm21 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - NO one will be able to help black people, unless they are in position to do so. No one will get in the position, by speaking about the community that American wishes was just here for entertainment. The old civil rights era people got us this far, and are now holding us back. The new black intellects know what we need to do, with out selling out. This is why even Farrakhan supports Obama, and this is why all the real, new, EFFective, intellects support Obama. I hope Obama ignores these people.
highclerist Says:
Sep 8, 2008 - And how does McCain propose to fund this? With the "wonderful budget" that inbred, bible-thumping douche is leaving behind? If you listen to McCain's speeches all it is - political pandering - never really addressing the issues; merely pointing them out and offering unrealistic solutions. A Veteran, who was in the POW camp with McCain, says much of McCain's POW experience was exaggerated and called the others traitors (in his book) and vice versa. Who has more to gain?
dimegood Says:
Sep 8, 2008 - highclerist listen, Obama is the one who is proposing TRILLIONS of dollars in spending and not a single indication as to how he will foot the bill. That's not even an issue that ANY economist has with John McCain, so let's not go there. As for McCain's POW experience, if you are comfortable criticizing that. If your conscious is okay with that then go right ahead. You can be for Obama without saying ignorant things you know? What you are saying makes you sound brainwashed and irrational.
highclerist Says:
Sep 8, 2008 - Did I praise Obama? Look who's brainwashed friend, of course we don't want to question McCain because he's a "national hero" in a war more useless than the Iraqi war. I'm not for either 'cause our votes don't mean shit when it's decided by the electoral college with the exception of a few states. Ridiculous proposals from both parties aside, Obama's spending estimate is honest compared to the bullshit McCain tries to feed us.
mrscorie Says:
Oct 2, 2008 - I disagree with their statements. This was a speech about American and I'm an African American. He doesn't have to put out there how black he is. Everyone knows he's black.
swampboy05 Says:
Oct 13, 2008 - Cornel West hit it on the head when he said "you can't follow tradition without acknowledging the past." We all know that Obama is black, but Obama has really yet to display OWNERSHIP that he's black. This is what they are saying. They still support him, but they expected more. Obama is a great public speaker. However, this could have came from his campaign advisers.
lorcaliph514 Says:
Oct 14, 2008 - Damn all my life i waited for this speech, and two people i have loved most are complaining about a great moment. As intelligent as they are, they miss the point. This was about the journey, not Dr,King. We know about Dr. King should Barack have spoke of Malcolm, Medgar, Fredrick, Fannie, come on! This is a new moment let it stand on its on. Damn let it go for one night.
bilgepipe Says:
Nov 5, 2008 - Julianne Malveaux: I remember when she said USA was made of "250 million little white bigots". Girl you are a RACIST. Cornel West: A fake intellectual spouting gibberish, which is his trademark. BTW has anyone else noticed that he hates people whose skin shade is white. Fuck you Cornel West. If Obama would have listened to ur inane babbling, he would have sounded as in coherent & bigoted as u. God Bless Barack for having an insight into the mind of decent white folks. Fuck you Racist Cornel.
wh0m33 Says:
Nov 10, 2008 - I have to disagree with the comments by this comedy team of Lucy and Dezi. Barack's victory was about AMERICA, not Black America. Why can't these 2 educated clowns see that. They look like a couple of cartoon characters, tavis included.
Empha84 Says:
Nov 25, 2008 - I know what you mean but you can see Hilary supports its sad. This man is President and he knows he has a lot to deal with ignorant press like this, kkk, and so on. Point blank he is going to do fine but he has a lot to deal with. It is not easy.
darrylspencer99 Says:
Sep 5, 2008 - It's funny but but it's true when they say "sometimes it's your own people". These black intellectuals are out of touch, just as out of touch as the Republican party. Old school black thought is too militant to be progressive, we all can't move foward if we're constantly looking backwards.
