Joe: Sorry for what? Emily: I'm sorry, but I think I'll have to leave you. Joe: What? No, you can't die! Please! He turned to the doctor, who was putting another IV in Emily's arm. Joe: Save her! Do whatever, just don't let her die! Joe leaned against the wall, thinking. Charlotte, Hannah, and Bambi were in tears. Nick and Kevin were trying to console Joe. Suddenly Joe stepped forward. Joe: Then take me. Emily: *weakly* No! No, you have to live and take care of the baby. Please... She blacked out again. Joe grabbed her hand and looked at the doctor. Joe: If she can't live, then I'll take her place. Nick: Joe, no! What would she do if she woke up and you were dead? Joe: At least she would be alive. Charlotte: She would be devastated! She might even kill herself! You mean everything to her and what about your fans? Joe was about to answer when the doctor put his hand on Joe's shoulder. Doctor: Make a decision. Joe looked around at everyone, who stared back. Charlotte's eyes were pleading. Joe knew how much Emily meant to her, and Emily was his whole world, too. He looked at the doctor, and suddenly Bambi stood up. Bambi: I'll go. Everyone looked at her, surprised. Joe gave her a look like she was crazy. Joe: What? Bambi: Well, you all have known her the longest, and no one wants you to die, so I'll go. Hannah was about to protest when one of the many machines surrounding their friend began beeping wildly and Emily's eyes opened. Joe ran to her and took her hands and cried into her lap. She laid a hand on his head and he looked up at her. A doctor walked toward him and helped him stand up. Doctor: While you were all talking, the medicine in the IVs began working, so she's alive now. You're welcome. Joe hugged the doctor and everyone crowded around Emily. She smiled at them and Joe hugged her tight. Emily: Want to help me finish? Joe: Oh, right! Doctor: Okay, let's let this baby hurry and get its first breath! Emily strained and gasped and about thirty seconds later a nurse stood up holding a baby wrapped in a towel. It began crying and the nurse handed it to Emily, who began to cry also. Joe: Hey, there. Welcome to life! Emily: Hi, Melody. Meet your dad. He's not as idiotic as he seems. Everyone laughed and gathered around to get a better look. Nick: Uncle Nick. I like it! Joe: Yeah, sure. Charlotte: She's so cute! Emily: Yeah, she looks a lot like Joe. See her eyes? Hannah: Aw! Bambi: Hopefully she gets your brain. If she gets her dad's, then that might be a problem. Joe: Hey! I did graduate from high school, so there. Hannah: What room is going to be the nursery? Emily: The room across the hall from ours. You guys are going to have to help us paint it. I'm thinking pale yellow with jungle animals. Joe: That's sounds cool. She'll be a wild child, like me! Emily: Oh, great. Charlotte: When do you get to go home? Emily: I think a little later. Doctor: Oh, no. If you like, you can get dressed and go now. Emily: Awesome. I think I'll do that. Charlotte, hold Melody. Charlotte: Yay, I get to hold her before Joe. Just kidding, Joe, you hold her. Joe: Awesome. He took little Melody and laughed. Joe: She's so tiny! Kevin: Don't break her. Joe: Ha, ha, so funny. He sat down on the bed and rocked little Melody in his arms. He began to sing quietly to her. Joe: Untouchable like a distant diamond sky, I'm reaching out and I just can't tell you why. I'm caught up in you, caught up in you. Untouchable burning brighter than the sun, and when you're close I feel like coming undone. In the middle of the night when I'm in this dream, like a million little stars spilling out your name. You gotta come on, come on, say that we'll be together. Come on, come on, little taste of heaven. Emily: Thanks for the little concert. Joe looked up and handed Melody to her. They left and drove back to their house. Kevin and Joe started arm wrestling, and Kevin was beating his brother senseless. Nick was busy pricking his finger for his diabetes. Nick: Dang, I ran out of band-aids. Hannah: *laughing* I'll go get you some. Nick: Thanks. Hannah went upstairs and grabbed a handful of band-aids from the bathroom drawer. When she was leaving, a splash of color caught her eye. She walked into Emily and Joe's room and pulled a picture from underneath the bed. It was a picture of Joe wearing on of Emily's bras over his shirt. He was striking a pose. Hannah's eyes got wide, and she took it downstairs with her. She tapped Joe on the shoulder. Hannah: Weren't you gonna show this to us? She held up the picture for everyone to see, and everyone but Emily laughed, she just let her mouth hang open. Joe laughed. Joe: Surprise! Emily: That's the bra I'm wearing right now!
