A short extract from a five screen video art installation at the World Museum Liverpool by Anne Robinson. 400 years ago Galileo invented the telescope. This work engages with the shocking reverberations of this moment and its revolutionary after-effects, taking a fresh look at time-space. A solitary rower orbits the dome, progressing across the star-filled universe, momentarily lost, navigating filmed frames, telescopic visions and painted seas. A ships bell tolls, but here, time is elastic. I am fascinated by the telescopes function: how it brings the faraway near; allows us to look backwards in order to move forwards. Originally a magic toy sold by charlatans it went on to turn the world upside down. "..nothing is visible without light.. without instrument.." (Poussin). Paintings, like telescopes, allow us to engage with imaginative time travel, to understand our place in the world and to see more deeply.
