I noticed that there was a little gap in the youtube videos, as none explained the pre-decimal coinage (i.e. before 1971). So here it is, myself explaining pounds, shillings and pence.

Sep 9, 2008 - Did you know that in the first 30 seconds there's a ghost in the top right corner!? Great video! My dad collects coins, so I remember a lot of the ones you talk about.

Sep 21, 2008 - Interesting, I have a few old pennies and my best things are a 1940 emergency issue one pound note and a 10 shilling note from the 1940s

Oct 10, 2008 - I'm still trying to figure out what a Quid is? did i miss that? In "A Christmas Carol" by Dickons, Scrooge says that he'll give a child 'half a crown', how much is this now? Was it a lot of money then?

mayhemrw Says:

Oct 11, 2008 - Ok, a quid is simply slang for a pound. I suppose it's the equivalent to saying "buck" instead of "dollar" in the US. Half a crown was 2/6, or 2s 6d, otherwise known as two shillings and sixpence. Today, this would be worth 12.5p, or £0.125, but back then, it would be worth approximately £5.00 (or about $8.5) in today's money. So it was a fair amount of cash back then.

Nov 28, 2008 - I really love old silver pre-decimal coins, coins prior to 1920 were made from 90% silver. well the farthing, half penny and penny were made from bronze, but over that they pretty much were solid silver.
