The original Magnetic Fields record was a brilliant satire of love songs. It was very New York. It was written to make fun of love songs. It was supposed to be a joke. Gabriel missed the joke completely, just like Joe Cocker ruined "Help with My Friends" by making Ringo's offhand comedy song all serious.
