This is a translation, at least in part, of a piece by Sappho, who lived in the 4th Century BC on the Greek island of Lesbos. The paintings are: "Sappho and Alcaeus" by Lawrence Alma-Tadema and "Sappho and Erinna" by Simeon Solomon both painted in the latter part of the 19th Century
